The WTC's National Championship (West) was held at Scotch Creek, BC on June 27 and 28, in what can only be described as "scorching" conditions, with the temperatures close to +40. It's a wonder that anybody showed up, as the beach would have been the best choice for many.
We had riders from as far away as Saskatoon, plus the usual good showing from Alberta and the lower mainland, who were all challenged by a technical 9 km loop with 20 sections on each day. Although we had planned to do extra loops, the extreme temperatures left us no choice but to cut back for both days. Also, as it would have been irresponsible to expect checkers to endure these conditions, we went with the "tried and true" group-checking system.
In the Expert class, it was a battle between Sam King and Tino Marin, with both ending up with the exact same score on Saturday. However, it was Sam who took the tie-break with one more clean. The other classes were also close, with the new Sportsman Class perhaps the most hotly contested.
